Un año después de la emisión del primer mensaje, Nokia tomó está tecnología y la llevó a todos sus equipos GSM. Pese a que su adopción por parte de los usuarios fue lenta, a partir del año 2000 en adelante su uso creció a pasos agigantados. En 2010, el servicio se volvió tan popular como las llamadas telefónicas, tanto que se enviaban alrededor de 200.000 mensajes de texto por segundo, según un informe del ITU.
De todas maneras, los primeros pasos del SMS no se dieron en 1992 con el primer envío. Según la BBC, los orígenes de esta tecnología se remontan al ingeniero finés Matti Makkonen, quién ideó este servicio en una reunión después de una conferencia de telecomunicaciones en 1984. «No consideró que el SMS haya sido un título personal mío, sino el resultado de un esfuerzo conjunto para recolectar ideas y escribir las especificaciones del servicio», sostuvo. Además asegura que «la necesidad de utilizar mensajes de texto va a existir por siempre. No necesariamente será lo que llamamos SMS, no será más un servicio que implique pagar por mensaje».
